Welcome! If you are a nurse scientist who has never been the principal investigator of a NIH research project and want to learn about the NIH, grantsmanship, and practical skills for advancing a scientific career, you've arrived at the right course!
In this course, you will learn information about:
- The general profile of NIH and its guidelines for grant submission,
- Practical skills necessary for developing a successful research program, and
- Key issues in research including research ethics, IRB, disseminating findings, and recruiting research participants.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Discuss the general profile of NINR including its organizational structure, mission, strategic plan, research and training opportunities, and impact.
- Discuss the general profile of the Clinical Center including the research and training opportunities it provides and the role of nurses in the intramural research projects.
- Describe key funding mechanisms including R15, R01, K01, K22, and K23.
- Articulate the four elements necessary for developing a competitive R01 or R15 application.
- Articulate strategies for developing a competitive application for K awards.
- Describe the process in which a grant proposal is received, referred, and goes through peer review at NIH.
- Recognize the review criteria adopted in the scientific review process for R01, R15, and K awards.
- Recognize the assistance provided by NINR program directors and grants management throughout the grant application process.
- Derive strategies for developing a successful research program from the perspectives of new researchers, seasoned researchers, and nursing school deans.
- Recognize issues related to ethical conduct of research.
- Recognize key IRB principles.
- Discuss research dissemination in terms of organization techniques, submitting abstracts and manuscripts, and evaluating self-progress.
- Identify common issues in recruiting and retaining diverse populations for research.
